Worth the wait!

Making a scrap quilt is easy. Making a great scrap quilt is a bit harder because it’s not just a collection of any old scrap you’ve got in your stash. It’s about mixing color and pattern, and knowing how to tie it all together to make something really special - to make a quilt that you don’t know why you love it, you just do. That’s the kind of quilt that Lissa Alexander makes.Lissa Alexander has been making quilts for more than thirty years. Starting with a quilt she made with her sister to working in a quilt shop, Lissa has always had a gift for color, and a talent for mixing different styles of prints. As the Director of Marketing for Moda Fabrics, Lissa has spearheaded a number of compilation books for Moda's fabric designers, and more importantly, she has created some of the recognizable and "most pinned" quilts in the online quilting universe. With Oh Scrap!, Lissa is sharing what she knows in her first "just Lissa" book.Oh Scrap! has a dozen terrific quilts ranging from confident-beginner level to intermediate. So? Lots of books have that. What sets this book apart is how Lissa explains what she did and why - mixing prints, color and adding that “something extra”. She shows how one quilt made primarily with 2.5” squares is unified by a single background and a common color element in each very different, very colorful block, while another made with multiple backgrounds works because the value of the fabrics used is what matters. The inclusion of swatch-cards showing many of the actual fabrics used in the quilt takes the guesswork out of what some of the terms mean. The swatches also make it clear that this isn’t about matching colors or fabrics - it’s about zingers and sparklers! There are a few fabrics and combinations that will have you wondering what she was thinking… right up until you see the finished quilt. As for the quilts, there are projects made with squares and strips - there is Splendid Scraps, Tone It Down and Stair Steps. If you love triangles as much as I do, Awesome Land, Indian Blanket and Firecrackers should keep you busy. (I’m already pulling fabrics for Firecrackers.) While I am pretty sure I won’t make it in pink, Sherbet Stars is high on my to-make list. I love how Lissa shows that simply changing the value-placement in the blocks makes it look like there are nine different blocks. In addition to the tips on using scraps, there are some great tips on piecing, pressing and storing fabrics. And most important, Lissa shares that you don’t have to have a warehouse-size stash to make a scrap quilt that you and your family will treasure.

Was expecting something different

I was expecting a book on how to use scraps, as in pieces of fabric already cut and perhaps the coordination of these "scraps" versus referring to yards of fabric. The quilts that are featured are beautiful and I intend to utilize this book but the materials are listed as 1/4 yard, or 1/2 yard or Fabric A or Fabric B requiring so many squares. The patterns and colors are then coordinated by cutting the squares. I think I was expecting to use more of my "leftover precuts" as referenced in one of the quilts. I had intended on utilizing all my leftovers in some form or fashion. I don't have 1/4 yard or 1/2 yard of material as my stash, nor to cut more small squares so was my purpose purchasing this book. Perhaps I am thinking more of crumb quilting.I like how the quilts are presented in the different sizes: crib, Throw and Queen. The book is really nice and do love all the different patterns and do recommend it but just was surprised at the "yardage" as a resource to begin the quilt. Scraps for me means precut scraps, leftovers.

but Lissa Alexander’s book of a dozen terrific scrap quilts ranging from beginner to intermediate level

I rarely buy books, but Lissa Alexander’s book of a dozen terrific scrap quilts ranging from beginner to intermediate level, captured my imagination. What sets this book apart is how she explains what she did and why with many useful tips and techniques. Nicely written, easy to follow instructions make this one a “keeper” near my sewing table.

Go get this book! You won’t be sorry!

An absolute need if you like scrappy quilts! Lissa’s approach to color is foolproof, as you will see in each of the beautiful quilts in this book. This is one of the few quilt books that I have bought that I have wanted to make every quilt in it!

Got Scraps? Must have.

Thank goodness for this book. The fabric scraps get so overwhelming so fast and this book really allows you to do some great things with them. Do read the introduction, as I found it very helpful in managing my scrap stash and how to organize it. It also gives a basic understanding of the elements of design, which (as a non artist) I had never had.
