50 Women Artists You Should Know

After reading a book by the Guerrilla Girls I became very interested in learning more about female artists so that I could pass that information along to my students. As with any overview of artists there are always going to be artists you love that may have been passed over but I believe this book has a great selection of female artists throughout history.The one area that is lacking a bit is a look at a larger variety of cultures. The females chosen for this particular book are for the most part still part of the western world.Still for anyone wishing to learn a little bit more about all those artists that art historians have had a habit of passing by, this is a good beginning.

These are overlooked artists that I want to know about !

The book arrived quickly and just as described—in excellent condition.

Summary of women’s lives was written well, informative, and interesting!

The biographies are in chronological order and are about one page in length. Each artist has 2-4 illustrations representing their work. At the top of each page there is a timeline indicating what else was going on in the world at the time of the artist. I like this book, however, I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. It appears that in the twentieth century, representative art ceases to exist or according to this author, has no relevancy. Only installation art, photography and collages are shown. I personally would rather look at art where the artist can paint and/or sculpt. Leave the installation art for another book.

At Christmas time, I always take as many of the mittens from the "mitten tree" for children in need that our church and also the YMCA have up, that indicate that the recipient is a girl and that she wants art supplies. I always get a art sets with paints, pastels and drawing supplies. I order as many copies of this book as I have mittens, and include the books with the supplies. I inscribe the book "For an emerging female artist! Some day you can be among these women. Have fun and experiment. Learn from these women's lives as you grown into yours. I believe in you!" Last year I gave five or six sets to different girls. This book is more important than the supplies because it really does a beautiful job of encouraging young female artists by telling past female artists' life stories. Highly recommend.

As far as it goes, the book's okay--but where was Alice Neel? Where was Judy Chicago? Where was Grandma Moses?--just to name a few!

Thoroughly thrilled to add this text to my Art library. It is a great addition and read for those interested in the amazing work of Female ARTists in History. I am a Fine Arts for Visual Arts major. I find it interestingly outrageous how women in the History of Art have been disregarded, discredited, disenfranchised and disillusioned from the greatness that lies within every single person that is willing to put the effort into their craft. Much information is lost, missing or unavailable for many of the female artists in this text, just as much as any other text on women in the history of art, but it is still a great resource if you’re interested in learning more about the 50 featured artists.

This was an interesting book that introduced me to a number of artists I had not been aware of previously, which is exactly why I purchased it.

A nice coffee table book white good substance

I guess this book is just a light reference guide to 50 women artists. There isn't much information or many reproductions of their work, but would be a jumping off point to investigate further if you find someone you haven't heard of before.

This book is a great introduction of women artists. Sadly most people can't name even five woman artists so I have picked up copies of this for friends and family members as I believe every woman should have a favourite female artist

This book was bought as a present, and the recipient, a female artist hence the choice, seems very pleased with it
