Q: How do you get it started?

There is one empty slot. You move one to it and then just start moving and mixing up the others until they are out of their co-ordinating color. After that then you work to bring them back in order.

Q: Im wondering how great they are for kids if they truly are breakable... considering these for easter baskets for a 7 and 6 yo..?

I think they will be great for this. My two were 9 and other had just turned 8 when they received these. They still enjoy them and they have survived their three year old cousin throwing them like a ball instead of using as a puzzle... I know other people have had problems with theirs though so as long as they use as intended (as a puzzle and a fidget) there should not be an issue. I think it would definitely be fine for a 6 and 7 year old. Mine find them pretty easy now but they still enjoy solving with them and kind of use as a fidget as well. Great for keeping entertained in car and just to pick up and play with randomly... I admit I've played with them a lot too and so have many guests
